James Michael Dorsey

James Michael Dorsey is a certified cetacean naturalist, trained by the American Cetacean Society. He has kayaked, canoed, or sailed the rim of fire from Alaska to the tip of Baja, plus the Sea of Cortez and California Channel Islands, to study cetaceans.

He has written extensively about close personal encounters with blue whales, grays, humpbacks, orcas and dolphin, and his articles have appeared in BBC Wildlife, California Wild, WEND, The Christian Science Monitor, Northwest, Travelerstales, The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, Seattle Times, and the LA Weekly. He is a regular contributor to Sea Kayaker, Wavelength and Ocean magazines.

His photos have been featured on the websites of the International Cetacean Society, National Wildlife Federation, Ocean Conservancy, California Gray Whale Coalition, and are used by the International Whaling Commission. He was a principal photographer for Seventh Wave Magazine, the largest marine environmental organization in Great Britain, and his work has twice been featured by Kodak International as their photo of the day. His selection of gray whales photos is acknowledged as the largest in existence, and he is internationally recognized as an authority on gray whales.

He has worked as resident naturalist in the gray whale nursery of San Ignacio Lagoon, in Baja, Mexico for 11 seasons. His first book is entitled, "Tears, Fear and Adventure."
