Sharon Bohn Gmelch and George Gmelch

Sharon Bohn Gmelch and George Gmelch both earned their PhDs in cultural anthropology from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and now hold professorships in anthropology at the University of San Francisco and Union College. Sharon has written nine books, including Nan: The Life of an Irish Travelling Woman (W.W. Norton, 1986) and The Tlingit, Encounter with Photography (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2008). George has published numerous books, including Inside Pitch: Life Inside Professional Baseball (Bison Books, 2006). Their new book together, from which this article was adapted, is Irish Travellers: The Unsettled Life (Indiana University Press, 2014).
